Cetirizin is a potent antihistamin . it is widely used in the treatment of allergy. the anti histamin activity of cetirizine peaks 4-6 h and lasts for up to 24 h .thus cetirizine offers singele daily dosing. Cetirizine is an antihistamine medication commonly used to treat allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and runny nose. It provides relief from seasonal and perennial allergic reactions by blocking the effects of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
mode of action
cetirizine exerts its antihistaminic action by blocking histmine H1-receptor.
indications
cetirizine is used for sensonal allergyc rhinitis, perennial allargyc rhinitis,chronic idiopathic urticaria and atopic dermatitis.
dosage and administration
Adult and child over 6 years: 10 mg once daily or 5 mg twice daily.
child 2 to 6 years: 5 mg once daily or 2.5 mg twice daily.
side effects
cetirizine like all other antihistamine may cause some undesirable effects.the most common side effects are drowsiness,dryness of mouth,gastrointestinal disturbances.no severe or irrevrsible adverse effects have been reported.
precautions
Although drowsiness is rar,neverthe less patients should be advised that it can occur and may affect perfomance of skilled tasks, excess alcohol should be advoided, half dose in renal impairment is advised.
in pregnancy and lactation
it should be used in pregnancy and lactation if absolutely needed.
